Whether for background music, a high energy party and dance band or concert ensemble, the Johnny Summers Quartet or Quintet creates a perfectly tailored environment for any event. A variety of styles will be performed, from light jazz and danceable up tempo rhythms to upbeat funk, pop, rock and blues. Ensemble size gives us the ability to emulate the brilliant sound of a full jazz orchestra for a fraction of the cost. Johnny Summers currently directs the Calgary Jazz Orchestra, and has been teaching students and running clinics over his musical career. Private music lessons offer students faster musical growth and development than traditional classroom settings. In-home instruction can encompass all aspects of the music experience, from theory and technique to performance and musicianship, and all lessons are customized based on each student’s needs and goals.

Arranging / Orchestration

 

Johnny has been influenced by a multitude of musicians, whom he has studied in depth throughout his career. Together these have have formed a proverbial 'painters pallet' in his mind, of which he has learned which colours to use to create something fresh and unique which can stand on it's own merit. Johnny can mimic certain styles, eras and even arrangers based on your unique needs, and can accommodate everything from small ensembles to big bands to full orchestras, including many different styles.

 

Johnny's unique approach to music arrangement and orchestration allows for that creative savoir-faire, however exact copies of recordings can also be transcribed when required.

 

Composition

 

Johnny Summers can write original music and lyrics for a variety of styles, including those that are outside of the scope of what he typically performs. He can create music and lyrics for bands, choirs, solo vocalists and any kind of ensemble for any type of event or situation, including:

Music Transcription

 

Transcription refers to notating a piece of music or sound which was previously unnotated and turning it into sheet music. If you have a piece of music that only exists in recorded form (CD, MP3, etc.), or a melody or idea, Johnny can turn it into a professional lead sheet, and arrange it for a specific ensemble.

 

For a full arrangement, direct transcriptions can be lifted and combined with melody and lyrics for a variety of ensembles.

 

Music Transposition

 

Transposition refers to the process of taking a piece of music and putting it into another key. Your original or existing song can be transposed to any key required.

 

Standard lead sheets, full orchestral scores and instrumental scores can all be transposed.

 

Music Copying

 

Johnny Summers can produce professionally prepared sheet music using the latest version of the Finale program. A variety of formats, sizes, ensembles and notations can be accommodated, and our in-house printing and binding services will help keep costs to a minimum.
